The government have high energy efficiency goals which in turn means its in the best interest of them to have all homes to be more energy efficient. People all over the country may be able to have a new boiler installed in their home free of charge or at a heavily discounted rate.
Essentially, the newer the boiler, the more efficient it will be, so it’s in the government’s best interests that your home is an energy-saving unit!
The grants are there for those with reduced access to the kind of cash needed for a new boiler to help them save both money and energy when their current model isn’t as energy-efficient any more.
It’s all down to the government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which is an energy efficiency initiative that aims to reduce fuel poverty and decrease carbon emissions. Big energy companies have been told they have to help British homes improve their energy efficiency. Boiler grants are one of the ways they are doing this.
You could qualify for a free boiler grant or money towards a new boiler, depending on your combined your household income.
If you are eligible for a grant you don’t have to worry about paying the grant back either – there are no repayments and no confusing terms and conditions to catch you out.
If the temptation of a free or discounted boiler isn’t enough, there are potential money-saving capabilities it could offer you in the years to come.
Having a new, more economical boiler installed could save you money on your bills, even as much as £350 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. It should reduce your carbon footprint too, so you’ll know you’re helping the environment as well which is a bonus!
Applying for a boiler grant is a very uncomplicated process, so there no need to worry about the application. All you need to do is contact an energy provider and they’ll conduct a complimentary assessment. You can get in touch with any provider that is offering the deal, it doesn’t have to be the company that currently supplies your household with energy.
Your current boiler must be at least five years old. If your current boiler is newer than this but is inefficient, it could be more cost effective to have your boiler repaired, rather than get a new one.
The grant amount you could receive will depend on your income. For example, a household earning £20,000 per year is likely to qualify for a larger amount than a household earning 40,000.
With taking your income in to account, you will also be assessed on how energy-efficient your home currently is. The worse your carbon footprint is, the more likely you are to receive a grant.
In addition to the criteria above, to qualify for an entirely free boiler, your household will likely be receiving benefits.
You will automatically qualify if you receive either Pension Credit or Child Tax Credits, and you may also meet the criteria if you receive any of the following benefits:
If you are successful in your application for a boiler grant, you will receive a new boiler, which will be installed in your home. Please be aware that you may also need brand new heating controls to work alongside your new boiler.
If you do, then this will often be included in the grant, so you won’t usually have to pay any extra for this added luxury. However, in a small amount of cases will a small cost from you be required.
In order to find out if you are eligible for a boiler grant please contact an energy supplier who is offering this scheme.
